Our estate, with its oceanic soul, is rooted in the Armorican bedrock. Out of 23 hectares of land, 18 are planted with vines spread over 6 different terroirs. The hillsides are shaped by the meandering Layon River, offering a multitude of different exposures and a whole range of terroirs.

In the heart of a wine village

Domaine Terre de l’Élu is located in Saint Aubin de Luigné, in the heart of the Layon Valley, a small valley within the Loire Valley appellations.

Our vineyards are spread around the village, between Chaume and Ardenay, on the right bank of the Layon River.

A terroir of schist and quartz

The entire estate is in the Anjou Noir terroir. On a schist bedrock, this part of the Armorican massif offers a wide variety of volcanic and metamorphic rocks. Twisted and moulded by geological folding and erosion, they reveal quartz pebbles on the surface of silty-sandy or silty-clay soils, or dark pebbles with bluish, grey or volet reflections, such as phtanite, spilite, cinerite (compressed volcanic ash), sandstone and blue schist.

Anjou's mild climate

Our small valley forms a transition zone between oceanic (Atlantic) and continental (Touraine) influences. This translates into good rainfall and prevailing westerly winds, as well as mild temperatures that are higher in our valleys.

The “south-facing slopes” effect accentuates sunshine, raising temperatures and drying out the soil. The dark colour of our soils also favours this phenomenon, which benefits the plants. This gives our Layon hillsides a Mediterranean feel.

Nos lieux-dits : un archipel constitué de plusieurs ilots parcellaires

The estate’s wines come from six named vineyard sites, each corresponding to a specific terroir: L’Aiglerie, Les Barres, Les Bruandières, Les Gaudumaux, Chaume, and Le Vaux.

This mosaic allows us to combine within our range both single-vineyard expressions with strong identities and more complex blends that combine several facets of the same grape variety.
